Gorgan, the provincial capital of Golestan in northern Iran, sits close to the southeastern shore of the Caspian Sea, with a walkable centre well supplied with cafés and restaurants. The city was known as Astarabad until 1937, when it was renamed to revive the memory of ancient Gorgan — a historically significant settlement near present-day Gonbad-e Kavus, known in Greek sources as Hyrcania. Part of the Great Wall of Gorgan lies in the surrounding area, and the Alborz mountains are within reach to the south.
