Gonder served as the seat of Ethiopian emperors for some two centuries after Emperor Fasilides established his court here in 1636, leaving behind a royal enclosure — Fasil Ghebbi — and a cluster of castles and churches that now form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city sits in highland terrain ringed by mountains, and its historic centre draws visitors with one of the most concentrated collections of imperial-era architecture in sub-Saharan Africa.
