Town on the Helmand River in southern Afghanistan, Gereshk grew up around a fort on the river's east bank that tradition dates back roughly two thousand years. The fort was taken twice by British forces during the Anglo-Afghan Wars, and local accounts hold that Timur lost a leg there during a siege. The Kajaki Dam upstream and the nearby Gereshk Dam feed irrigation canals that sustain the region's agriculture.
