Each July, Garanhuns hosts its Winter Festival, drawing visitors from across Brazil and beyond to this mid-sized city in Pernambuco's Agreste region. Set in highland terrain well inland from Recife, the city serves as a regional hub for healthcare, commerce, and education across dozens of surrounding municipalities. Its origins date to 1658, when a land grant established the first settlements on territory previously home to the indigenous Cariri people.
