Gangneung

South Korea

A coastal city on South Korea's east coast, Gangneung sits between the Taebaek Mountains and the East Sea, with a walkable centre known for its café scene. The city hosted the ice events for both the 2018 Winter Olympics and the 2024 Winter Youth Olympics. Gyeongpo Beach and Jeongdongjin — a popular sunrise-watching spot with the train station closest to the sea — draw visitors year-round, and each year by the lunar calendar the city hosts Gangneung Danoje, a UNESCO-listed intangible cultural heritage festival.
