Freshwater, at the western tip of the Isle of Wight, was the birthplace of physicist Robert Hooke and the long-time home of Poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson — two strong reasons to visit a compact coastal town already known for its chalk cliffs and the sheltered cove at Freshwater Bay. The wider West Wight area draws regular visitors, and the town has a café and restaurant scene that would suit a town twice its size.
