Étaples
Pas-de-Calais · France
Fishing and leisure port on the Canche river in northern France's Pas-de-Calais, Étaples has a café and restaurant scene that punches above its size and sits close to the coast. The town drew a significant colony of French and foreign painters in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and holds the largest British military cemetery from the First World War, with thousands of graves. Local traditions include a scallop festival and a blessing of the sea, and the craft of northern French marine carpentry has been listed on France's national intangible cultural heritage inventory since 2022.
