Known since the 19th century as the Waldstadt — forest town — Eberswalde sits at the edge of the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve in Brandenburg, northeast of Berlin, with extensive woodland on all sides offering scenic walks and viewpoints. The town traces its origins to the 13th century and was a significant heavy-industry centre until German Reunification, a past still visible in neighbourhood names like Kupferhammer and Messingwerk. A little central core holds cafés and restaurants.
