This walkable town in northeastern Greece with a dense café and restaurant scene, Drama sits at the foot of Mount Falakro amid abundant natural springs that likely gave the city its ancient name. Historic churches dot the centre, and the town has been part of the Greek world since classical times, prospering under the Byzantine Empire as a commercial hub and later through Ottoman-era tobacco trade. An annual film festival each September and the "Eleftheria" liberation celebrations in summer draw visitors through the year.
