Didymoteicho
Έβρος · Greece
This pocket-sized town in Greek Thrace with a hilltop medieval fortress that has drawn attention since antiquity, Didymoteicho carries an unusual historical footnote: Charles XII of Sweden is said to have been imprisoned here by the Turks. The fortress is accompanied by local myths, including the legend of the Forty Arches. The town sits near water, with mountain views and a concentration of historic churches for its size.
