Known as the "City of Churches" for having a higher density of churches than any other city in Virginia, Danville is a small independent city on the Dan River in Southside Virginia. It briefly served as the final capital of the Confederacy in April 1865, and later became a flashpoint during the civil rights era. Virginia International Raceway, a circuit hosting national motorsport championships, sits a short drive away.
