Cullowhee
Jackson County · United States
This compact university town on the Tuckasegee River in North Carolina's Jackson County, Cullowhee is home to Western Carolina University, whose 12,000 students shape the local café and restaurant scene. The site was once a historic Cherokee town centered on the Cullowhee Mound, and its name derives from a Cherokee phrase meaning "Judacullah's Place" — a reference to a giant warrior and hunter central to Cherokee religion and culture. The surrounding mountain region includes UNESCO World Heritage sites.
