The site of the 722 Battle of Covadonga — the first Christian victory over Arab forces in the Iberian Peninsula and the traditional starting point of the Reconquista — this tiny hamlet in the Picos de Europa mountains of Asturias is the most visited monumental complex in the region. Its religious landmarks include a 19th-century basilica, the Holy Cave where the bodies of Kings Pelagius and Alfonso I lie, a 16th-century collegiate church, and a monastery. The two mountain lakes above the village, Enol and Ercina, regularly feature as a stage in the Vuelta a España.
