Founded in the 9th century by the Emir of Mosul on a manmade island in the Tigris, Cizre is a Kurdish-majority city in southeastern Türkiye sitting on the river at the Syrian border, close to Iraq. Its origins as a river crossing and port made it a significant commercial and intellectual centre in Upper Mesopotamia by the 12th century, when Christian and Jewish communities flourished here. The city carries a layered and often turbulent history, from Ottoman decline to 20th-century conflict.
