Chengde, a city in Hebei Province northeast of Beijing, is best known for the Mountain Resort, a vast imperial palace and garden complex that served as the Qing emperors' summer retreat and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Set against mountain terrain and centred on an expansive lake, the resort is one of China's largest surviving imperial gardens, offering a rare look at Qing-dynasty court life outside the capital.
