Gold built Charters Towers, a small Queensland town roughly a two-hour drive south-west of Townsville, during a boom that ran through the final decades of the 19th century. Rich deposits drew intensive mining activity that shaped the town's character and streetscape, and commercial mining has resumed after a long pause. A central core of cafés and restaurants serves visitors exploring the area's gold-rush heritage.
