A pocket-sized coastal city in Chile's Atacama Region, Chañaral sits directly on the Pacific and serves as the gateway to Pan de Azúcar National Park just to the north. The surrounding area is shaped by copper and iron mining, and the ocean near the city carries contamination from that industry — worth knowing before planning a beach visit. The town holds a café and restaurant scene reasonable for its size, with scenic viewpoints in the surrounding desert landscape.
