Champasak
Laos
Sitting on the west bank of the Mekong River in southern Laos, Champasak is a compact town that serves as the base for visiting Vat Phou, a temple complex roughly 10 km away. The town was once the seat of the Kingdom of Champasak, an independent Lao state abolished by the French in 1945. Today its riverbank is lined with guesthouses and a café and restaurant scene that is unusually rich for its size.
