This trading town in Romania's Oltenia region, Caracal sits on the agricultural plains between the Jiu and Olt rivers and has served as a commercial hub for the surrounding grain-growing area for centuries. The compact centre holds a concentration of heritage buildings, and in 2022 the town was officially designated a local tourist resort.
