This trading town in Romania's Oltenia region, Caracal sits on the agricultural plains between the Jiu and Olt rivers and has served as a commercial hub for the surrounding grain-growing area for centuries. The compact centre holds a concentration of heritage buildings, and in 2022 the town was officially designated a local tourist resort. Road and rail connections make it a practical base, with the port of Corabia and Craiova's international airport both within reach.
