Island at the mouth of the Casamance River in southwestern Senegal, Carabane was the first French colonial trading post in the Casamance region and retains traces of that history alongside a compact cluster of cafés and restaurants. The island is accessible by boat from Dakar and Ziguinchor, and its Diola majority population maintains a rice-farming culture that has long defined life in lower Casamance.
