Çamlıyayla district
Mersin · Türkiye
High in the Taurus Mountains above Mersin, Çamlıyayla is a summer highland district whose lakes, streams, and pine forests draw crowds escaping coastal heat each year. The area is known for karsambaç, a slushed ice drink considered an ancestor of ice cream, as well as a mountain goat breeding centre and hunting grounds open to visitors since 1989. Namrun Castle, built in 1045 as a defensive fortification, survives in the district alongside traditional summer houses that remain closed through winter.
