Every August, tens of thousands of people descend on this modest Valencian town to hurl over 100,000 kilograms of tomatoes at each other in La Tomatina — a festival declared of international tourist interest in 2002. Set along the Buñol River and surrounded by mountain ranges, the town also holds a medieval castle, the church of San Pedro, and 17th-century roadside inns. Rail connections link it to Valencia city, a short distance to the east.
