Bunia, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Ituri Province, sits on a highland plateau between Lake Albert to the east and the Ituri Rainforest to the west, with mountains visible from the city. Its walkable centre has a real café and restaurant scene. The city also serves as the northeastern DRC headquarters of one of Africa's largest UN peacekeeping operations, a presence that reflects the region's history of conflict during and after the Second Congo War.
