Bukittinggi is a highland city in West Sumatra, Indonesia, known as the birthplace of Mohammad Hatta, co-proclamator of Indonesian independence, and as the emergency capital of the republic during a critical period in 1948. The Jam Gadang clock tower marks the walkable centre, which has a lively café and restaurant scene. Sitting at elevation in the Minangkabau Highlands near the active volcano Mount Marapi and the Sianok Canyon, the city has a cool climate and scenic surroundings, with the wider region ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
