Burundi's largest city and economic capital, Bujumbura sits on the shore of Lake Tanganyika in the far west of the country, with mountains close by. The walkable centre has a real café and restaurant scene alongside a concentration of historic churches. The city served as Burundi's political capital until 2018, when that role passed to the more centrally located Gitega.
