This small Castilian town in Burgos province that served as a Roman crossroads settlement — then called Virovesca — and later grew along the medieval Camino de Santiago route, reaching its peak during the Renaissance. Its monumental centre includes the Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor, the Monastery of Santa Clara with a Gothic cloister, and a typical Castilian Plaza Mayor, with the Santa Casilda sanctuary nearby. The town sits within sight of mountains and within a wider region ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
