Germany's largest East Frisian Island by area, Borkum sits in the Wadden Sea off Lower Saxony and has built its economy almost entirely around tourism since beach holidays took hold around 1830. The island holds state recognition as a North Sea health resort, with spa facilities spread across the town. Parts of the island and the adjacent tidal flats fall within the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park, which forms part of the broader UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea.
