This university city in south-central Indiana built around Indiana University Bloomington, the flagship campus of the Indiana University system, with a walkable centre dense with cafés and restaurants. The city was established in 1818 and gained wider recognition as the setting for the 1979 Academy Award–winning film *Breaking Away*, which features Indiana University's annual Little 500 bicycle race. Situated between branches of the White River, it serves as the main commercial and service hub for the surrounding region.
