Beaufort West
South Africa
The largest town in South Africa's arid Great Karoo region, Beaufort West sits alongside Karoo National Park and serves as a major stop on the N1 national road between the Western Cape and Gauteng. The surrounding district is built on Merino sheep and goat farming, and Permian fossils have been found in the area to the west. The old Town Hall and Dutch Reformed Church are both declared national monuments.
