Batu Arang
Malaysia
Coal mining built Batu Arang in the early 20th century, and the industry's rise and collapse — from the 1908 discovery of deposits through wartime disruption to permanent closure in 1960 — left behind a town of ruins, water-filled mine pits, and colonial-era buildings. Granted heritage town status in 2011, this Selangor town a short drive north of Kuala Lumpur preserves that industrial history as its main draw for visitors.
