Recognised by UNESCO as a City of Gastronomy in 2023, Battambang is a Cambodian city on the Sangkae River with a walkable centre dense with cafés and restaurants. Founded in the 11th century by the Khmer Empire, it retains French colonial architecture now subject to local conservation efforts. Nearby ancient temples, a circus, and the bamboo railway draw independent travellers, while the surrounding farmland has long supported a food, art, and cultural scene.
