Corsica's principal port and commercial hub, Bastia sits at the base of Cap Corse on the island's northeast coast, where a walkable harbour front, small fortifications, and a dense concentration of historic churches make for rewarding exploration on foot. The town served as the island's commercial centre during the Genoese period and was chosen as capital of the short-lived Anglo-Corsican Kingdom, and it remains known today for its wines.
