A small border town at the northern edge of Laos's Luang Nam Tha Province, Boten sits directly opposite the Chinese town of Mohan and functions as a crossing point between the two countries. Most residents speak Mandarin as their first language and the town runs on Beijing time, giving it a distinctly Chinese character despite being on Lao soil. Mountains are visible from the town, and water is a short drive away.
