Balibo
Timor-Leste
Balibo, a little town in Timor-Leste's Bobonaro district near the Indonesian border, is known internationally as the site where five Australian journalists — Greg Shackleton, Tony Stewart, Gary Cunningham, Brian Peters, and Malcolm Rennie — were killed by Indonesian forces on 16 October 1975. The 400-year-old fort from which they filmed that day has operated as a hotel since 2016, and the house where they stayed was restored by the Victorian government in 2002 as a community centre.
