Balanga, the provincial capital of Bataan in the Philippines, has a compact centre with a concentration of historic churches and a growing café and restaurant scene. The city joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities in 2015, and the wider Bataan region holds sites connected to one of the Pacific War's most significant episodes. Mountains and water are both within easy reach of the centre.
