Baise City

Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region · China

Baise, in the western reaches of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, is best known as the site of the 1929 Baise Uprising led by Deng Xiaoping, which gives the city a prominent place in Chinese revolutionary history and makes it a major "red tourism" destination in southern China. The city sits along the Youjiang River amid mountainous terrain and karst landscapes, and its name derives from a Zhuang phrase meaning "in, or blocking, a mountain pass." Zhuang people make up more than seven in ten of the local population.
