Avenches

Switzerland

Once the most significant Roman settlement on Swiss soil, Avenches is a tiny village in the canton of Vaud whose ancient ruins survive from its days as Aventicum, a major outpost on the transit route from the Rhône valley toward Germania. Situated in the Three Lakes area with water close at hand and mountain views in the distance, the village also has a modest but real café and restaurant scene for its size.
