Armazi
Georgia
Excavations begun in 1943 at Armazi, a hamlet near Mtskheta in Georgia, have uncovered the remains of what Georgian sources identify as the first capital of Kartli — a fortified royal citadel on the right bank of the Mtkvari River with occupation layers dating from the 4th century BC. Ruins of towers, a colonnaded royal hall, bathhouses, and an aqueduct have been found, along with gold, silver, and bronze objects including a royal sarcophagus from the 2nd century AD. The site declined after Tbilisi became the capital and was devastated by Arab raids in 736–738.
