The UNESCO-listed Sheikh Safi al-Din Khanegah and Shrine Ensemble — sanctuary and tomb of the founder of the Safavid order, and burial place of Ismail I, founder of the Safavid Empire — anchors this large city in northwestern Iran. Ardabil has long been a centre of silk and carpet trade, and its classical Persian carpets are among the most celebrated in the tradition. The city sits near the mountains of the Sabalan range and close to the border with the Republic of Azerbaijan.
