Andoany
Madagascar
The main town on Madagascar's island of Nosy Be, Andoany is more widely known by its colonial name, Hell-Ville — a reference to French admiral Anne Chrétien Louis de Hell, governor of Réunion from 1838 to 1841. One of Madagascar's oldest colonial settlements, it sits on the island's southern coast within reach of both water and mountains, and serves as the practical base for exploring Nosy Be.
