Small rural municipality in Belgium's West Flanders province, Alveringem sits between Veurne and Poperinge in a quiet agricultural landscape crossed by two waterways: the IJzer river runs through the south of the municipality, while the Lovaart canal passes through the town centre. The area is within reach of UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region. The writer and priest Cyriel Verschaeve was attached to Alveringem's parish and was re-buried near its church in 1973.
