Sitting directly on the Alqueva reservoir in Portugal's Alentejo region, this pocket-sized settlement gives its name to the Alqueva Dam, an arch dam built across the River Guadiana. Planning began in the second half of the 20th century to address water shortages and support agricultural production; construction resumed in 1995 after a long pause, and the dam's floodgates were officially closed in February 2002. The reservoir's creation required the relocation of the nearby village of Luz to higher ground.
