Almadén's mercury mine, the most productive in the world over two millennia and the source of roughly 250,000 metric tons of liquid mercury, earned the town UNESCO World Heritage status in 2012 alongside Idrija in Slovenia. The mine closed in 2002 but opened to visitors in 2006, with access to its first level some 50 metres underground. Set in the Sierra Morena in Castile-La Mancha, the town takes its name from the Arabic for "the mine," a fitting legacy for a settlement that has revolved around mercury extraction since Roman times.
