Aalholm Castle, on the south coast of the Danish island of Lolland near Nysted, is the oldest castle on the island, with origins traditionally traced to the mid-12th century and a first written record from 1329. The main building, constructed in phases between 1256 and 1585 and later restored in 1889, presents a mix of early Renaissance and Gothic character. The estate's large garden contains rare plants, and the castle sits directly on the water's edge.
