Alexandroupolis
Έβρος · Greece
Port city on the northeastern Greek coast with a walkable waterfront that doubles as the main commercial strip, Alexandroupolis pairs a dense café and restaurant scene with a cluster of historic churches in the centre. The port lighthouse is a local landmark, and the nearby Evros delta and archaeological sites of the Mesimvria Zone offer day-trip options. One of Greece's younger cities, it grew from an Ottoman fishing village in the mid-19th century before passing through Bulgarian and Greek hands and taking its current name in 1920.
