This small town in Spain's Badajoz province, close to the Portuguese border, with vineyards in the surrounding countryside and cafés and restaurants in its compact centre. Alburquerque carries a notable medieval history — it was once a dominion of the kings of Portugal, and the titles of Lord, Count, and Duke of Alburquerque were significant in Castilian affairs. The American city of Albuquerque, New Mexico takes its name from this town.
