Ain Bessem

Algeria

This town in northern Algeria's Bouira province, Ain Bessem sits on the fertile Arieb plain with the Zbarbar and Djurdjura mountain ranges close by. Romans occupied the area and built military fortifications here, and an Ottoman-era fort was later constructed to monitor the movements of local populations. The town carries the historical epithet "city of a thousand wells" and is also known locally as "city of a thousand martyrs" for its resistance to French colonial rule.
