Founded in 1835 and named after a South Carolina Railroad president, Aiken is a South Carolina town that rose to prominence in the late 19th century as a wintering destination for wealthy Northeasterners — among them the Vanderbilts, Madeleine Astor, and W. Averell Harriman. The Winter Colony legacy shaped much of the town's character, and a compact centre today holds a concentration of cafés, restaurants, and historic churches. The University of South Carolina Aiken is also based here.
