A compact village on the plain of the former Lake Fucino in Abruzzo's Marsica area, Aielli sits in mountain terrain and traces its recorded history to 1280. A medieval tower at its centre now houses a public astronomical observatory. The village was damaged in the 1915 Avezzano earthquake and sits within a wider region ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
